Monday, July 27, Labor Forum Program on WRFG 89.3 FM, 4-5pm
On Monday, July 27, The Labor Forum, WRFG 89.3FM, 4-5pm, presents an hour of labor news, history and live interviews with working people in Atlanta and around the country.
During the 4:15-4:30 pm segment, Max Fant and Dave Fedack, members of IATSE in Atlanta, describe the economic hardship facing stagehands and other workers who are being denied unemployment benefits during temporary lay-offs by the Georgia Department of Labor. Over the last few years, the state of Georgia has reduced the amount as well as the number of weeks a worker can receive unemployment. Recent legislation excluded seasonal school workers from receiving benefits. The right to unemployment compensation is one of the many issues facing workers.
At 4:30pm, Steelworker Union #8751 President, Andre Francois and Treasurer, Georgia Scott call into The Labor Forum, from Boston to talk about the continuing struggle of the city’s school bus drivers with the union-busting international conglomerate, Veolia Corporation. With the school year soon to start, the bus drivers are in contract negotiations with a central demand being the rehiring of their four leaders including Francois. Local 8751 has a long record of militant struggle to win living wages and benefits for its members and fighting as hard for communities facing racism, police repression and social service cutbacks.
