WRFG Labor Forum Program on Monday, Sept.28
On Monday, Sept. 28, The Labor Forum, WRFG 89.3FM, will discuss two important events happening in Atlanta this week.
The final negotiating session for the secret, corporate power grab trade deal that is known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) will be held in Atlanta. The impact of the TPP will severely undermine worker rights, food safety, environmental regulations and principles of democratic governance.
Melinda St. Louis from Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch and Neil Sardana, Atlanta Jobs with Justice, will talk about the danger of the TPP and the Oct. 1 day of protest in Atlanta.
Yvonne Robinson, Secretary-Treasurer, of the Georgia AFL-CIO, will be the guest from 4:30-5pm to talk about “misclassification” and the hearings on pending legislation to correct this attack on workers’ pay, benefits and working conditions. Employers in multiple fields use this deceptive practice of labeling their workers “independent contractors,” making them ineligible for unemployment and workers compensation benefits. Despite working for companies for years, they are not treated as “employees,” and have to pay their own social security taxes and often bear the expense of the equipment needed to do the job. Port truck drivers, home healthcare workers, limo drivers and construction workers are just some of affected by this “misclassification.”.
Tune in from 4-5pm to The Labor Forum on 89.3FM every Monday, online at http://www.wrfg.org, on mobile Apps and watch the program on The Labor Forum YouTube channel where programs are archived in video and audio.
