On Monday, Feb. 1, The Labor Forum on WRFG 89.3FM will speak with a Baltimore Peoples Power Assembly member about the dire conditions the recent historic snow storm caused for the city’s majority working class and poor neighborhoods. Days after the end of the blizzard, with schools still closed, and many streets unplowed, PPA members went with shovels and food staples to the housing projects and low-income areas where many families were stuck without access to transportation and grocery stores. It’s a story of real solidarity that you will want to hear.
From 4:30-5pm, Verdaillia Turner, president of the Ga. Federation of Teachers will shed some light on the recently-announced plan by the Atlanta Public Schools Superintendant to close and privatize several “low-performing” city schools and its relation to the Governor’s Opportunity School District take-over scheme.
Over the last several years, state funding for public education has been cut by billions of dollars,;teachers have had classroom size increased and more mandatory testing of their students. At the same time, public money is being siphoned off to private management companies. She will be discussing the need for a grassroots movement to support quality, public education for all of Georgia’s children.
The Labor Forum airs every Monday from 4-5pm on WRFG 89.3FM in Atlanta.
